The celebration kicks off on Friday with the Friends of Little Friends Electric Lights Parade, followed by the Grand Illumination of more than 350,000 lights and a visit from Santa and his reindeer. Ring in the holidays starting with the Grand Illumination of the Great Tree in Martin Plaza at 5:45 p.m. on Friday, 11/28. The Lighted Holiday Parade follows at 6 p.m., featuring favorite children’s characters and, of course, Santa Claus. The festival includes horse-drawn carriage rides, visits with Santa and plenty of fabulous winter fun.

Outside, 750,000 white lights illuminate the garden. Inside the Regenstein Center, a 10,000-square-foot exhibition features 16 classic model trains that zoom overhead, through tunnels and around famous Chicago landmarks, all of which are made from natural materials. It’s a lovely winter scene, complete with gently-falling “snow” and every kid’s favorite, the ladybug train.

Flowers, garlands and decorated trees add a festive note to the lush rooms and hallways of the majestic Cuneo mansion. An 18-foot Christmas tree in the Great Hall, poinsettias and holiday greenery abound during tours, offered daily and on selected evenings. Outside, holiday decorations and animated displays will blanket the grounds; people in cars can drive through to view thousands of twinkling lights.

The walk takes visitors through Madison St.’s Festival of Windows, showcasing the talents and creativity of local merchants. It also includes horse-drawn sleigh rides, Santa, a marshmallow roast, face painting, open houses, music and more.

The traditional walk begins with a visit from the Swedish symbol of the season, Santa Lucia, coming by horse-drawn carriage to give out Swedish cookies. Santa appears to light the tree on the Courthouse lawn and opens his Gingerbread House, and all day guests can enjoy holiday shopping and dining till late (9:30 p.m.) in historic downtown with plenty of holiday treats to choose from. Five distinctive homes open their doors for guided tours, and a traditional church tea and keepsake booklet are included. Cost is $28 per person.

Every kid’s favorite Christmas train is pulling into Downer’s Grove today, when families can board the magical Polar Express and meet the conductor. A ride to the North Pole, livened by a reading of The Polar Express, is followed by a visit to Santa’s workshop for lunch, crafts and games. Santa will tell stories and then holiday songs will be sung on the ride back to the station.

This 19th annual event focuses on the future of Chicago with its Daniel Burnham-inspired theme, “Thinking Big.” Topics such as city planning, global poverty, culture and human rights are covered through exhibitions, lectures, literary readings and dramatic productions like “The Great Gatsby” and “Gilgamesh.” Notable thinkers, writers and other luminaries host around 115 different festival programs.

Around 25,000 kids and adults come to screen a unique collection of over 200 live-action and animated films from 40 countries, ranging from shorts and TV series to documentaries and child-produced works. This is the only children’s film festival to be an Academy Awards qualifying festival, and kids can vote for their favorites. Expect around 150 celebrities and filmmakers to be on hand as well.

Every year, Daley Plaza becomes transformed into a German marketplace to reflect the joy and warmth of the holiday season. The marketplace, filled with red and white-crested huts overflowing with curios, chocolates, toys, ornaments and more, attracts locals and tourists alike for hand-crafted items and traditional Christmas cheer from over 50 vendors. The Harlem Globetrotters make an appearance on 12/29.
